Hachi-awase

In Matsuyama city, the autumn festival is held from 5th to 7th Oct. every year.

In the Dogo area, people in eight towns carry their portable shrine.
The carriers of each town leave Isniwa Shrine and Yu Shrine from the dark in the morning.
After walking along the approach road while shaking their portable shrine, they gather at the square in front of the Dogo Onsen station.

The purpose to shake the portable shrine is to inspire their God.
People believe thet the more they shake it violently, the more God rejoice.

The carriers of each portable shrine gathered at the square, and then they confront and hit their shrine each other.
It is called as “Haci-awase”.

“Hachi-awase” is the ultimate form of shaking the portable shrine.
It is so violent that there have been deaths in the past.
The rejoicing of God is highest by “Hachi-awase”, and “気;qi, the energy force” of Gods flows into all the way of this town.

Dogo Onsen said to be the oldest hot springs town in Japan.
The energy flows filled with this town would be one of the reason why Dogo Onsen has been loved by many people for a long time.
