Little shrines where spirits live

This scene comes out at the beginning of the movie “Spirited Away”.

Chihiro who is the the central character in this movie and her family are going to their new house with a car.
However, they get a mistake on the way.
Going on a bumpy road, there is an old Torii made of wood on the right side.

And there are many small shrines abandoned underneath.

Chihiro asked her mother, “What’s that?”.
Because she had never seen such a sight.
“Shrines of stones, houses of God.”
Her mother replied dryly because it was a common scene for her.
In this scene, the difference between Chihiro and her mother’s “feeling respect for wondrous things” is depicted vividly.
This is one of the theme of this movie.

There are many such stone shrines in the vicinity of Dogo Onsen.

The shrine of the photograph is located in the corner of the residential area, along the outer moat on the south side of Dogo Park.
Even if the surrounding buildings change, the shrine remains in the former days.
Local people enshrine it with due respect.

In the movie “Spirited Away”, a Japanese inn named “Abura-ya” comes out.
Ancient and multitudinous gods visit there to heal their daily tiredness.
“Studio ghibli”, the production of this movie officially said that the “Dogo Onsen Main Bldg.” is one of the model for “Abura-ya”.

Perhaps, the ancient and multitudinous gods may be visiting “Dogo Onsen”, truly.
